I recently had the pleasure of reading Sally Mitts Finds A Home by Shain Stodt, and it has quickly become one of my favorite children’s books! This enchanting and heartwarming story follows Sally Mitts, a timid kitten who faces the world alone after her family moves away and accidentally leaves her behind.
Sally's journey begins with exciting adventures in the great outdoors, where she befriends butterflies and squirrels. However, the reality of street life soon sets in, with honking horns and unknown people posing constant threats. Just when it seems Sally might be overwhelmed by her new circumstances, a kind person finds her asleep on their porch and takes her to an animal shelter.
At the shelter, Sally meets other street cats and forms a touching friendship with Charlie the Tailless. Their bond brings comfort and joy, highlighting the importance of companionship. But when Charlie is adopted, Sally is left feeling lonelier than ever, as her shyness keeps potential adopters at bay.
The turning point in Sally’s story comes when a quiet, gentle man visits the shelter and offers her a chance at a new home. The narrative beautifully explores Sally’s inner struggle as she learns to trust again and open her heart to the possibility of love and belonging.

This book is a heart warming masterpiece intended for children of all ages.
Cleverly written in rhyme & lavishly illustrated in full color by the author, Sally Mitts Finds A Home is bound to become a new classic.
This is the story of a young kitten who has had her whole world tragically torn apart at a tender age.
The ever resilient kitten becomes a modern day Odysseus, travelling far and wide, meeting new friends and averting danger along the way. For Mitts Ithaca turned out to be a forever home provided by an amazing no kill shelter.
As much fun as the book is in and of itself, there is an important message about the way humans value the welfare of other types of sentient beings imbedded in the text.
I recommend it highly.

Sally Mitts Finds A Home: The Story of A Shy Shelter Kitten, by Shain Stodt, is a heartwarming and engaging children's book that follows the adventure of a young kitten named Sally. When her family moves to a new house, Sally, scared by the noise and commotion, hides and is inadvertently left behind. When she finally emerges from her hiding place, she finds herself alone in an empty house. Hungry and frightened, Sally ventures outdoors in search of food, encountering a garden filled with butterflies, worms, and flowers. She is soon discovered by a kind couple, but her fear drives her to run away, leading her through unfamiliar streets and loud honking cars, further away from home and into a state of being lost. Sally, now far from her loving home, faces uncertainty about her future. What unfolds next is Sally's journey at the shelter and her subsequent adoption by Fred Mitts.
The story, while beginning with a sad and anxious twist, evolves into a tale of hope and kindness. As a reader, I initially felt heartbroken that Sally's family left her behind. However, the narrative took me through an emotional journey fraught with anticipation. The moment Sally met Fred Mitts, I shared her skepticism but was relieved and hopeful when Fred took the time to bond with her. His kindness and patience offered a comforting resolution to Sally's ordeal. Children will undoubtedly be captivated by Sally's adventure and will root for her to find a new, loving family.
The hand-drawn illustrations by the author add a charming and colorful dimension to the story, making each page visually engaging and enhancing the narrative. The illustrations create a soft and welcoming atmosphere that complements the storyline perfectly.
Sally Mitts Finds A Home: The Story of A Shy Shelter Kitten is an enchanting tale that children will love. The story teaches valuable lessons about kindness, resilience, and finding new beginnings. This book marks the start of what promises to be a delightful series of adventures for Sally and her readers.

Everyone deserves the chance to live happily ever after, especially pets waiting for adoption in animal shelters.
Almost all of the pets my family had when I was a kid were rescues, and we often knew no more than a handful of things about their lives before they came to live with us. Some of my favorite scenes in this story were the ones that explored a few of the reasons why a pet might need to be rescued or adopted. These were such honest and sweet moments that later played out in how Sally and her companions behaved at the shelter and helped to explain why some animals behave certain ways due to their past experiences.
I loved how much space was left for interpretation and discussion. As this is the first instalment in a new series, it made perfect sense for the author to introduce characters without answering many of the audience’s questions about them or tying up every loose end. There were so many opportunities here for the sequels to explain what happened to Sally’s original family, whether she might someday see Charlie the Tailless again, and so much more.
The gentle and empathetic ending made me smile. It was perfect for the little ones who will read this or have it read to them, especially since some of the earlier scenes talked about how hard it can be to be a stray animal in ways that were appropriate, but still sad, for that age group. Ending on a reassuring note was exactly what was needed, and I look forward to seeing what sorts of adventures Sally might have next.
Sally Mitts Finds A Home – The Story Of A Shy Shelter Kitten - was a heartwarming tale that made me yearn for more."

There are so many positive things I could say about this book, it's hard to know where to start!
The author's writing is simply brilliant! The way they have masterfully crafted the story and breathed life into Sally's character is truly praiseworthy. As a result, this tale truly touched me, it resonated with me on a profound level, and the ending brought such a comforting and satisfying feeling. It's safe to say that it has left a lasting impression, and I have no doubt that children will absolutely adore it as well.
As a proud mom of three rescued cats myself, I love the message that this book conveys. It beautifully showcases the magic of adopting from a pet shelter and the incredible bond that can be formed between humans and their furry companions.
I really appreciate that Stodt didn't sugarcoat Sally's journey or the experiences of other rescue cats and was overjoyed to learn that there are further stories by this author, continuing the adventures of the amazing (and very adorable ) cat protagonist."
